Jade plants are resilient, low maintenance plants that are an excellent choice for beginners. However, if you have just bought a jade plant home and are confused about where to place them, then you are at the right place.

We have covered everything you need to know regarding the ideal placement of your jade plant. So, let’s get right into it.

As a general rule, jade plants need to be kept in a brightly lit spot away from the reach of pets and children. Also, keep them away from cold drafts and high temperatures as it results in wilting. Keeping a jade plant in the southeastern or southwestern part brings wealth and harmony to the family.

Jade plants are resilient, but if you completely neglect their needs and stress them with unfavorable conditions for a long time, they may go in shock. They can even stop growing and start wilting.

We are not trying to stress you by telling you these things, but just informing you. It may seem a lot but, your jade plant has simple needs.

You just need to provide them with a balanced environment, and they will thrive.

Factors determining the placement of the jade plant

Being a flexible plant, jade plants often survive in a variety of conditions. Therefore, you can always experiment with their placement, especially if favorable conditions are not possible.

Although they are sturdy, you need to maintain an appropriate living environment for them to thrive. We have discussed those conditions, and you can consider these factors while placing your jade plant.

Light

Jade plant

Light is the basic need of every being due to so many reasons. For example, jade plants love light, and when provided with appropriate lighting conditions, they can grow healthier and glossier.

Being flexible plants, they adapt to different lighting conditions without complaint. But they might exhibit very slow or not much growth in such conditions.

Let’s find out which is the best lighting for your jade plant.

Low light: Jade plants can sustain in low light but will not display much growth. Low light slows down photosynthesis and other functions. As a result, the leaves turn yellow due to less production of chlorophyll.

They cannot generate enough energy hence the leaves and stems look dull and ill. So low light is not an excellent option for your jade plant.

Indirect light: Indirect light is deemed to be the best light option for jade plants. It gives them enough light, helps them generate sufficient energy and chlorophyll. As a result, the leaves and stems stay green, solid, and healthy.

The soil will also dry quickly, saving itself from staying moist for long. Giving at least 6 hours of indirect light to your jade plant will keep them healthy and happy.

Direct sun: Unlike other houseplants, the Jade plant prefers the direct sun for a few hours. It will help them to grow their best without any stress. However, exposing them to harsh afternoon sun can give them sunburn.

South-facing windows and west-facing windows are the few best choices to keep your jade plant with just the right amount and intensity of light.

However, keeping in a window with the direct harsh sun keeps them a few feet away to reduce the heat.

If your jade plant is growing outdoors, make sure to keep them under a shade. Too much direct sun can give them sunburn and stress them to the point that they may stop growing.

Temperature

Temperature of the room

Jade plants can survive in a variety of conditions. They are tough and flexible. Only at extreme temperature levels do you need to worry and monitor their state.

During summers, they thrive in almost all temperature levels. The ideal level ranges between 65°F-85°F.

During summer, keep them indoors to save them from hot drafts and too much heat. However, the temperature may also rise, and with continued exposure, the plant can suffer.

The Jade plant can tolerate a low level of temperature in winters. For example, they can survive temperatures between 30°F-50°F in winter.

Still, it is preferred to keep them in temperature above 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter to evade any repercussions.

Exposing jade plants to frost or low temperature for longer periods can make the plant droopy and limp, which you have to wait to see if they can revive.

Thus, you need to move your plant to favorable temperature levels whenever the temperature goes to that level.

Do not keep your jade plants near:

  • Vents
  • Radiators
  • Furnaces
  • Fireplace
  • Windows

Keep your jade plant indoors in a container in cooler months, especially if you live in an area where the temperature level falls below 40°F regularly.

Humidity

Humidity meter

Jade plants being succulents are used to live in arid and dry climates in their natural habitat. This is a clear indication that they like low humidity levels. They thrive in low to moderate humidity levels. Though, they can survive in high humidity too.

When humidity levels are 30% to 50% is when jade plants flourish the most. They do not like to be misted or over-watered. These conditions raise the humidity around them.

Keeping them in a low humidity area with bare soil between watering keeps them most happy. Keeping them in a high humidity area for shorter periods will not harm them.

Things to keep in mind while placing a jade plant at home

There are few things you should keep in mind before placing your jade plants. These are as follows:

Near window

Jade plant 8

Jade plants like both direct and indirect light but in the right balance and intensity. They need the right balance of both the light to grow and mature. So all you need to check is the intensity of direct and indirect light they are getting.

Keeping jade plants near the window with harsh afternoon sun can give them sunburn and other issues.

If you do not have any other option, then use sheer curtains to reduce the strength of the sunlight. Again, this light intensity is precise for your jade plant.

Jade plants can be placed a few feet away from a window with direct sun, such that they receive ample indirect light for the entire day.

During winters, move your plant outdoors in the direct sun such that they receive light for at least 6 hours. The sun is not too intense at this time of the year, which will satisfy their sunlight demands.

Also, please do not keep your plant so that it touches the window through winters. It may give them temperature shock.

South-facing window, west-facing window are some excellent options for placing your jade plant. But do not blindly follow this. It may vary from place to place.

You need to check which window fulfills all the light needs of your plant.

You can keep them in a spot where they can get straight morning and afternoon sun and indirect light in the afternoon. This is the best spot for their growth and development.

Keeping away from children

Jade plants are mildly toxic to humans and can cause problems when ingested. If by any chance, your child ingests jade plant, they can undergo intestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.

This is sad that you cannot let your child play around the jade plant. Jade plants should be kept in hard-to-reach places. However, an adult may not suffer or gets affected as much as children.

Children are tender and mischievous, and they may suffer more than adults.

If your child keeps on touching plant leaves, they can chew them in the blink of an eye. Therefore, you need to be extra cautious while placing your jade plant.

Jade plants are toxic, and none of their parts is spared of toxicity. This should be kept in mind when looking for the right spot for them.

Keeping it out of reach of pets

Jade plant 4

Jade plants are toxic to dogs and cats, even birds too. Dogs and pets roam around and always look for something to play. They are innocent and vulnerable. Hence it would be best if you took extra care of them.

All parts of jade plants are toxic, though the toxic substance in them is not yet known or identified. Dogs and cats will suffer from the following when ingesting jade plant:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Irritation in mouth
  • Heartbeat irregularities
  • Gastric distress
  • Depression

The pets cannot digest these plants and may suffer according to the amount they have ingested. If a large amount is ingested, they can suffer severely.

These factors should be kept in mind while placing your jade plants and any noxious plant for that matter. If the plant is in the reach of pets, they may play or eat it out of curiosity.

Avoid placing near a fireplace.

Jade plants do not appreciate cold drafts, frost due to which many planters move their plants indoors near a fireplace to raise the heat around them. Unfortunately, this may do more harm to them.

If you leave your jade plant near a fireplace, they may go through some stress and will show stress through the following signs:

  • Dry leaves
  • Burnt leaves
  • Bone dry
  • Yellow leaves

The jade plant is already not getting the proper environmental conditions due to cold weather. So keeping them near the fireplace is like torturing them.

If you monitor a few points before keeping them near the fireplace, then you can avoid any issues. They are:

  • Move the jade plant a few feet away from the fireplace.
  • Keep your hand in front of the plant, feel the heat after placing it.
  • If your hand can bear the heat, then it is perfect for your jade plant too.

 The temperature of the room

Untitled design 1

Jade plants are most happy in room temperatures; the ideal range is between 65°F-85°F. However, they can tolerate temperatures as low as 30°F.

This sometimes becomes a problem for them, as many planters take them for granted. As a result, they skip their temperature requirement while placing them indoors, especially in the room.

If the temperature goes too high for a consistent period, jade plants may suffer. The plant will dry too quickly, and leaves will start to lose moisture and become dry. It will then affect the entire plant as the situation persists.

If the temperature level is low for prolonged periods, the jade plant will strive to operate appropriately.

They may stay wet for longer periods, making it harder for the plant to absorb nutrients from the soil and roots. The photosynthesis process will slow down, hence affecting the leaves primarily.

You need to consider the temperature requirements of your jade plant while placing them in the room.

They will survive in unfriendly conditions, but if there is no hope for better conditions for a long time. Then it would be best if you considered keeping your jade plant in some other better area.

Jade plant in bedroom

Jade plant Artificial lighting

Jade plants are auspicious plants, symbolizing growth and renewal. In addition, they give off positive energy, making it the perfect choice to keep in the bedroom.

Jade plants improve the air quality and remove harmful toxins present in paint, polishes, glues, etc.

In addition, they contribute to increasing the humidity of the space. Finally, these plants are easy to maintain and adds a touch of beauty to your bedroom.

This doesn’t mean you can mindlessly put your jade plant anywhere in your bedroom. You have to consider a few points before their placement in the bedroom. They are:

  • Place your jade plant in a spot so that it receives at least 6 hours of light. It can be natural or artificial.
  • Please do not keep it opposite to the AC. The cold and dry air will harm them, drying out the leaves quickly.
  • If you place the plant in a room where the aircon is running, consider keeping a bowl of water around your plant. This will help with the humidity.
  • Twist them every time you water them for even distribution of light.
  • Do not mist around them. It can lead to yellow and brown spots on leaves.
  • Provide good air circulation around them.

If you follow the above points while placing and maintaining your jade plant in the bedroom, they will always stay happy.

Jade plant in the bathroom

Jade plant water

Jade plants are low maintenance and resilient plants. They adapt to low light conditions very well. However, keeping them in a well-lit space with some direct light is ideal.

Some planters like to experiment or, let’s say, fill each space of their home with plants. The bathroom is also one of the places where planters like to keep plants.

Jade plants can also be kept in the bathroom but with some precautions or conditions. They will even clean toxins from the air and make the space more breathable.

Jade plants like low to average humidity around them. Being succulents, they do not react well to moist and humid environments.

Bathrooms are a space with high humidity and low light, just opposite environments to what jade plants prefer.

We can still make some arrangements and rules to keep jade plants in the bathroom.

First, you need to make sure that your jade plant is not getting a splash of water every time you bath.

It would be best if you keep their soil dry between watering.

Also, please keep them in a spot where they can get a few hours of light. It can be artificial too.

If you feel your jade plant is not displaying any new growth, you can switch them with other plants regularly.
