Will Peace Lily Bloom Again? (+How To Get Peace Lily To Flower Again)

Peace Lilies are common houseplants with dark green leaves and white flowers that bloom once or twice every year. But, it is disheartening to see that the flowers are not blooming at all or have stopped blooming after one bloom.

So, in this article, we shall learn if your peace lily will bloom again and how?

Peace lilies fail to bloom again because of improper care. You need to provide them adequate light, moist soil, and the correct temperature and humidity to bloom again. Blooming can also depend on the plant variety, as some peace lilies only bloom once a year during their blooming season.

If you wish to make your peace lilies bloom again, keep reading this article as we will discuss that in detail. We will also find out what is the ideal time to expect blooms on your peace lily.

When do Peace Lilies bloom?

The Peace Lilies bloom once the plant matures. The plant takes at least 1 to 1½ years to mature completely. So, if you have bought a peace lily with flowers, but later it does not bloom anymore, it means that your plant is not yet mature.

The commercial growers use gibberellic acid, a growth-regulating chemical, to forcefully grow flowers in peace lilies to make the plants look attractive.

You should avoid such chemicals. But you have to wait for at least 1 or 1½ years to expect natural blooms in the plant.

Peace Lilies flower best in the early summer or spring season, with bright indirect sunlight. The flowers remain alive for at least one or two months, and after that, they start turning brown.

Sometimes, they will even flower during the fall months if the plant is well taken care of.

Why is my Peace Lily not blooming?

If you have bought a peace lily along with a bloom, and then it stops blooming, it is because your plant is immature and has been forced to grow with gibberellic acid. In such conditions, you will have to wait for 1 or 1.5 years to see blooms in the plant.

If you have a mature peace lily plant that has stopped blooming, the probable reason might be that you have stopped caring for your plant after the first bloom.

Let us dive into the reasons that lead to no blooms in peace lilies.

Inadequate light

Peace Lily low light

One common reason for no more blooms in your plant is insufficient light. Peace lilies need bright indirect light to bloom.

Low light will slow down the process of photosynthesis, which will result in slow growth and no blooms in peace lilies. Whereas excess light will affect the plant’s health and cause sunburn.

Therefore, bright and indirect light is ideal for blooming in peace lilies. If it is placed in a low light area, try moving it to a brighter spot and wait for the blooms.

Poor watering technique

Improper watering has adverse effects on the overall health of the peace lily.

Overwatering is a common mistake that keeps the soil damp most of the time. This leads to root rot as the roots suffocate by staying in the damp soil all the time.

The roots fail to function and provide water and nutrients to the plant, creating an extremely harmful environment. Thus, an overwatered unhealthy peace lily fails to grow or bloom.

On the other hand, underwatering can also prevent blooms in your peace lily. Peace lilies need to remain hydrated for a healthy plant and healthy blooms.

Insufficient nutrition

With proper light and water, the peace lily also needs the right amount of nutrition to grow and flush blooms.

Although peace lilies can survive without fertilizers, they need adequate nutrients for cell division, promoting growth and prolific blooming. Peace lily needs fertilizer once a month when it is growing to encourage blooming.

A lack of nutrients also occurs if the soil is not of the right quality. Only fertilizer will not help in providing nutrition. The soil needs to have good nutrition too.

Poor soil

Soil could also be the reason why the peace lily is not flowering. If the soil has a poor drainage system, it can cause overwatering.

Soil with high clay content will cause overwatering as the clay will hold more water for an extended period, whereas sandy soil will drain water very quickly, making the soil dry too fast. So the potting soil must have good drainage.

Adding compost to the potting soil can help to make a sound drainage system. It will help in both retaining moisture and draining water.

The soil’s pH level is also a factor behind no blooms in the plant. The pH level has to range between 5.8 and 6.5. Above or below this level will affect both the growth and the flowering of the plant.

Temperature and humidity

Peace Lily Temperature

Peace Lilies prefer temperatures ranging between 68-85°F during the day and 10 degrees cooler at night. Since they come from tropical zones, they need at least 50-60% humidity to thrive.

If they remain in freezing temperatures, the cold will injure them, and there won’t be any blooms either. Most of the time, the flowers buds die because of cold drafts.

Therefore, you must always maintain the ideal temperature and humidity so that the plant doesn’t get stressed or damaged.

Old plant

Old plants do not have the energy to bloom. If your peace lily has completed its lifecycle, it means that the plant is now old.

An old plant loses all its energy and fails to bloom. If you suspect that your peace lily is not flowering due to being too old, count its age.

Young plant

Another reason for no blooms on your peace lily is that the plant is too young to bloom. A commercially grown peace lily might have flowers on it because of the usage of gibberellic acid. But after you bring it home, you might not notice blooms for an extended period.

If you want to see blooms, you have to wait for the peace lily to mature. Until then, take good care of it. After 1 or 1.5 years, you will notice the blooms.

How to make Peace Lilies bloom again?

Peace Lily flower

You can make your peace lilies bloom with proper care and attention. Avoid using artificial methods to grow flowers forcefully. Proper cultural and environmental conditions will give your plant beautiful white blooms once or twice a year.

Let us discuss how to get blooms back again in your Peace Lily.

Provide adequate light

To make your peace lily bloom again, you need to give it bright and indirect sunlight. Keep it near the north or west-facing window. These directions will give the plant the right amount of sunlight.

If you have kept them near a south or east-facing window, use curtains anytime the sun rays become intense. Pull down the curtains to create a filter to direct sunlight. This will give the plant perfect indirect sunlight.

Peace lilies might be able to tolerate direct sunlight for a few hours during the winters.

You can use grow lights for your peace lily if it is not getting enough sunlight. The right amount of light will allow your plant to bloom once or twice a year during the early summer, spring, or fall.

Keep the soil moist, not wet.

For healthy blooms, the soil must be in a suitable condition with proper watering. Keep the soil moist. Let the topsoil get dry before the next watering.

Before you water the peace lily, check the moisture level by poking a finger inside the soil. If half an inch of the soil feels dry, you can water the plant.

To maintain correct moisture in the soil, make sure it has a sound drainage system. Water the soil once a week from all sides and place the plant in a bright spot so that the soil can get dry.

Avoid using tap water. Use distilled and tepid water for best results.

Fertilize the plant

Peace Lilies need Fertilizer

Peace Lilies do not demand much fertilizer as they are light feeders. But fertilizing at least once every one or two months is necessary. It encourages prolific growth and blooms.

With each watering, the nutrients get washed away. So peace lilies need enough nutrients to remain healthy and bloom.

Apply a water-soluble fertilizer and water the plant well after applying fertilizer. Do not over-fertilize the plant.

Keep your peace lily in a warm location

Your peace lily can stop blooming after one or two blooms due to low temperatures. During the cold winter months, keep your peace lily in a room where it will receive some warmth.

Bring the plant indoors during cold, windy weather if it is placed on the balcony or patio. Keep the plant away from the window to protect it from cold drafts. Try regulating the temperature of the room if it gets too low.

Keep the peace lily away from radiators, vents, and air conditioners as they release very hot and cold dry air, harming the plant.

For humidity, try misting, install a humidifier or use a pebble tray. Give the plant at least 50% of humidity.

Remove the spent leaves and flowers

Removing dead and old flowers from the plant promotes more flower growth in the plant.

The plant stops wasting energy over the old ones, and once you remove those, it focuses all its energy on growing new flowers.

Final thoughts

Factors determining the placement of peace lily

Providing the right amount of light, water, fertilizer, temperature, and humidity is vital if you want blooms on your peace lily more than once.

They bloom once in the spring or early summer every year. But if the growing conditions are perfect, you will notice flowers on them again during the fall months.

If you still see flowers once a year, it might be because the peace lily you own blooms only once a year.

Do not expect your peace lily to bloom immediately after its first bloom. You have to wait for the fall or next spring to see flowers on it again.

The peace lily blooms stay for 1 or 2 months. Prune and remove the spent flowers once they start turning brown. This will save the plant’s energy which it can focus on producing new flowers and flower buds.
